Primary School Resources
This is a guide to help you use the teaching resources on the Teaching Resources Page to set up your own single workshop or full day event. The sushi making can be carried out in the school hall enabling you to hold the whole event in one room with different tables set up for each activity. Once you have purchased your sushi kit you not only have access to more resources but we are also available to help you personally with any queries you may have.
The free teaching resources have been worked into 20 minute or half hour activities so that they can be used to create separate workstations. You are then able to manage your pupils in smaller groups rotating them through the different stations to create a great Themed Day or cultural experience.
The 'highlight' of the event is the actual sushi making lesson which is a fantastic hands on experience that all the pupils will enjoy. In order to make your life even easier we have provided all the equipment and ingredients you need for the sushi lesson in a kit that we deliver direct to your door. Once you have ordered a kit you will also have access to our Members Zone where we provide even more resources for you to use.
You can either run this traditional Japanese exercise regime inside or out with the whole group at the start of the session depending on numbers or keep it as a separate station. Why not ask for parent helpers to come in and cover each half hour sessions.
You do not need to go to the expense of buying origami paper. Simply fold the corner of a sheet of plain A4 to create a square and then cut off the spare paper. Once you know how much to cut off it is best to use a guillotine. (Approx 87mm for an A4 sheet). If you need to create an additional work station because of numbers you can always get the pupils to colour in the A4 sheet in the style of origami paper before they use it. The designs can be very intricate and take a while!
After all the excitement it is always handy to have an activity that keeps the children seated and quiet for a few moments so why not engage them in a game of Goe. This can be an extended computer activity if you ask them to create their own Goe board or otherwise simply print off our board and instructions in the Members Zone.
This activity can be extended if you wish to incorporate computer skills and ask each pupil to print their names off to then copy. Alternatively you could ask them all to do this at home in preparation for the day or prepare them yourself.
This has proved so popular with the pupils that many schools have then gone on to run parent lessons too. Why not consider inviting the parents to this activity - it always helps to have extra pairs of hands!

We are constantly adding new and exciting resources. With Childrens Day in May we will be looking at the Kodomo no hi festival in more detail and providing extra relevant resources for that too.
