Teacher: "I just want some advice really. I am making sushi with my year 4 children on Thursday and I want to make the rolls into flower petal shapes. I just want to know how I would make one of the ends pointy instead of making it into a roll? Alternatively if it’s easier, how would I make a Daisy?"
Make Sushi in School: "To make a pointy maki roll you do not roll in the conventional way to get a pointed end. Lay the nori flat on the table and put a row of rice horizontally along the width as you would for a maki roll but leaving a small gap at the top and the bottom. Fold the nori until both edges meet and then seal (using water on your finger if necessary). You will probably only need a quarter sheet of nori for this depending on the size of petals you require. An alternative way that doesn't give such a defined point but may work for what you need is to squash the maki roll when still in the bamboo mat having rolled in the conventional way. They are quite pliable.
You may, however find it easier to make rounded flowers similar to the photo below. You simply roll all your small maki rolls in a larger sheet of nori when you have made them. To make a daisy I would suggest mixing cooked egg yolk to some of the rice for the central maki roll. The five outer rolls can remain white and when they are then all wrapped in an outer sheet of nori you have a very pretty daisy.
To create a more colourful flower as above why not use beetroot to colour the rice."
